Hi y'all. I started construction on my new home 3 weeks ago, and i would like your comments on my filtration system. The pond is about 35000 gallons and it'll be split in 2, with half of it outside, and half of it in the greenhouse. Both of the ponds are connected by a 4 foot wide, 4 foot deep tunnel. Another underground tunnel links the outdoor pond to my indoor filtration room. This tunnel is filled with lava rock, and the indoor filter is a 1000g tub filled with lava rock.

So, water is circulated from the indoor poond to the outdoor pond to the filter and then back to the indoor pond.

Will there be any beneficial bacteria die-off caused by water going indoor-outdoor-indoor.............?

And how large of a pump do you recommend for my pond?

lastly; mods, please dont move this to the pond forum. the people there are really slow at answering.

The pics are of my progrees so far; the black spaces are there because i had to blank out my neighbors homes.

A pond filter?

as long as everything has a good strainer I wouldn't think it would create a problem. I would worry about cracks and other things though. Have you considered using sewer lines? what will there be access to the tunnels for maintenance?

Also, if it's below the frost line and the water stays warm you should be ok with bacteria.

I'd dig about 2-3' down, place in some insulation and then pond liner. before water reaches the lavarocks, it will pass through a 100 micron stainless steel mesh screen. As for maintenence, there will be a # of wooden boards covering it, so that wont bbe a problem.

........

All im asking is if this underground water tunnel would be an okay idea and how much GPH my pump should be.

if you want one turn per hour ...35000 gph... about 600 gpm,,, i would use several pumps in parallel.

i dont know the temp and how clear you want the water.....could be more or less.......what are you going to keep and how heavily stocked ???

When the pond is up and running in the fall, i hope to order about 10 AAA quality koi from Japan, with the hopes they breed in the spring. Also, I'd have a couple channel cats, shebunkins, and some of these "human faced" koi, which i saw at the lfs.

my goal for this pond is to make it is energy efficient as possible.

On drsfosterandsmith.com i saw a 5000 gph pump that only burns up 280 watts.

Think 4 of these would be enough?
Like i've said before, there will be a TON of biofiltration. The filter itself is a 4*10*4 trickle filter filled to the brim with lava rock, gravel, and ceramic fragments.

sounds like a very light fish load........might work out fine.....i would like to hear from someone with a large pond.... i have experience with heated tanks and high turnover rates.... the 5000 gal tank runs at 350 gpm but this cannt be compared to a pond like you are doing....john

oh ok. Yea I thought it was a good idea.
