for a 357 gal. tank how big would the sump have to be? Would a single magdrive 3,600 gph suffice or would 2 be better? return and inflow rate? thanx!

Common rule of thumb is 1/3 the size of the tank for the sump. Two is always better.

3600 gph should be ok... Size of the sump (and gph) is not as important as design and efficiency of the sump.

I have a 180g with 75g tank as a sump, as well as a 26g trashcan and a 15g rubbermaid bin. Total of 115g.. but how is it being used is the question.

While my 450g has a 75g long sump, but 5' tall bio towers sticking out of it. So it's more like 175g of volume if you include the towers. It has it's own inefficiencies, but just saying "make it bigger" or "use more pumps" wouldn't help a thing.
