Hey guys; I've a new tank sitting at home which holds 35g water..
I have thought about the setup for a week or so now and am still unsure what to go with.

I would like to get some 'real' fish into the tank. i.e. i want to step away from guppies and swordtails and try and become a little more serious about the hobby.
So a cichlid tank. Its only 35g so i cant have any that grow to...6'' for obvious reasons so something like Blue rams? Anybody able to share experiences with these? Any other cichlids that remain around the same size as the rams?

Thanks in advance

Updated list of Cichlids i've found on my own which APPEAR to be suitable going by just size for a 35g tank.

Keyhole
Bolivian
Marble Convict
Albino Cichlid

Welcome any comments on them regarding setup requirements, temperament, breeding, feeding etc

convicts would be a perfect cichlid to start with considering the size of your tank jus to get the fill of cichlid keeping. beware these fish can breed like rabbits(under statment) at such a young size so if you start with a male and female you will have 2 or 3 hundred in no time.
good luck and welcome to the world of cichlids.

Any kinda convict or would there be one thats gonna be better suited to a newbie? I should avoid plants right? So just slate and any substrate or is gravel prefered? May get some amazon swords to create a grass like scene

convicts are in my 35g, marble and albino. They love clay pots. My guys dig up plants, so I have to weigh them down. I have mine with sand and they dig in it a bit. I mostly have the fake plants because of the digging up reason and they seem to kill my plants, not sure why haha.
Convicts are pretty fun. I got mine as small fry and watched them grow which is fun with any fish. I have not found any young with mine yet, they show all signs of breeding that I know of, but I never see any fry (which is probably good because I only have a 35g for them).

best of luck

Oh cool! I will deffinetly look into setting up for convicts then! :)

Yeah i read they will dig up plants and decorations to make themselves at home! I'd love to do a sand tank -dribbles- How'd you clean the sand? A friend was thinking of doing sand and i asked him and his answer was 'i will get a lobster' - which just didnt sound right to me.. lol
So if i just had 2-3 Cons and some smaller dither fish id be set?
Would i need to go by the same rules for fish as i have previously when theres an aggressive fish in the tank? (minimal finnage and not to similar in colouration)

If i were you I would try to get 2 males of 2 females. With convicts, as someone stated before, they breed like, well nothing really compares, they have hundreds of babies every 4 weeks-ish. That means extra tanks, extra tanks, trying to sell them and inevitably culling alot of them.
