Alright, just got my 37 G tank and still can't decide on exactly what to get. I'm interested in cichlids but am open to just about all ideas but I would like 1 or 2 predatory fish.

A guy who works at my LFS told me the most aggressive cichlid is Paratilapia Bleekeri from Madagascar. It's a beautiful fish but I was wondering if that was true or not?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

No answers at all..? That's wack, I thought this was one of the most entertaining discussions to have when setting up a tank. I still am yet to stock any fish in my tank so any recommendations are still welcome as I'm very open minded to all kinds of fish although I'm planning on perhaps getting a cichlid with some aggression.

well it's really a matter of personal choice, because your tank is 37 gals, it limits your choices severly on the predatory, and aggresive cichlids.

i've never really known Paratilapia Bleekeri to be a very aggresive cichlid, but it really vaires from fish to fish., the first thing that comes to mind is a nice peaceful planted tank with a few rams in it. there not very aggresive or predatory, but in a nice planted tank, there fun to look at.

12 - 18 exodon paradoxis (bucktooth tetras). with these you could even do a lightly planted setup or some driftwood pieces......very active schooling agressive fish.....:headbang2

Cool what type filter are you going with?

If ya went with a breeding pair of convicts and a shoal of 10 tiger barbs this would make for a very entertaining tank. Once the parents establish there territory its interesting to watch them defend it and the parenting behavior is great too. The tiger barbs are quick and pretty rugged, also it's hard for the cons to focus their aggression on just one fish.

Would I be able to have a Green Terror, a Pictus Catfish, and 2 Chinese Algae Eaters? The GT and catfish at the LFS are all juvies so finding two small similar sized of those species won't be an issue.

I'm sorry, I just looked up the Pictus Cat and realized the specific species I'm referring to is the one that maxes at about 5 to 6 inches and is silver with black spots. Not 100% of the scientific name but I'd still find it hard to believe he wouldn't be alright in there since he was the only fish I've became rather sure I want. The idea of getting a breeding pair of Convicts for my 37 has been proposed to me from a few different people, would I be able to keep them with one of the catfish I'm trying to describe?

Thanks again for any and all feedback

I'm actually starting to shy away from cichlids unless I choose to use the 37 to grow up a baby oscar. Idealy I want something that's not seen a whole lot but I want it to be predatory, it doesn't need to be aggressive as long as I can watch them hunt and it's something pretty cool that can live atleast a year in a 37. My LFS said they can get me probably anything I can think of and they'll order it. So what are some cool ideas I'm really struggling to make up my mind on what to get because I like so many different fish that no one single fish has stood out from the rest yet saying PUT ME IN THERE FOOL and make it a species tank with just a few lil roomates
