Not much, but I finally got an aquarium for myself. It is a 37 gallon that I got from my mother in law for free (she wanted it out of her house). I have a heater, and all the basics. I know it is small, but I am wanting to get a few fish for it. I am really wanting for a few bottom feeders or possibly only one, and a couple cichlids. What would you do with this set up?

how about a couple of cory's and two pairs of firemouths?

I never considered firemouth's before, but I looked at them a bit after you mentioned them, and I really like the look, and description of them sounds like what I might be looking for. I am still interested in texas cichlids, and dempsey's. I am open to all suggestions, but am starting to lean toward the firemouth's. Would clown loaches be possible with firemouth's? If not I do like cory's very much, and would be completely fine with them.

All of the fish you mentioned would need a much larger tank. For your tank size, stick with fish under 7-8". Cories and firemouths would work, but if you get firemouths, I think the tank is only big enough for one pair. Here are some other fish that could work for your tank size:
pea puffers
killifish
mollies
guppies
pearl, moonlight, dwarf, three-spot, or golden gouramis
butterfly fish
otocinclus
bushy-nose pleco
any sp. of cory (if you get cories, get at least 5-6)
zig-zag eel (M. circumcinctus)
danios
any tetra sp. under 3"
shell dwellers
apistogramma's
rams
a convict pair
hatchet fish
glass catfish
knight gobies

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my question. Would a pair of firemouths, 5 corys, and a small school of danio or tetra's be ok together?

pretty sure t. meeki would be fine for a 37...
