Not much, but I finally got an aquarium for myself. It is a 37 gallon that I got from my mother in law for free (she wanted it out of her house). I have a heater, and all the basics. I know it is small, but I am wanting to get a few fish for it. I am really wanting for a few bottom feeders or possibly only one, and a couple cichlids. What would you do with this set up?

Your options are really only dwarf cichlids. Apisto's from SA, or shell dwellers like neolamp mutlifasciatus from Lake Tanganyika. If you went with the apisto's some smaller corydoras bottom dwellers. If multi's then a few syno lucipinnis as they max at about 3".

Agree with danotaylor, that size tank has onlly enough space for the smallest of ciclids, and maybe no more than 2, and some ditherfish
But first, knowing what kinnd of tap water you have would be a plus.
Most Apistos prefer soft, low pH water.
Multis prefer hard, high pH water.
Your water bill, may be a good source for that info, or calling your water provider,, and ask about water parameters like pH and hardness.
