I have a new 37g, and I would like to set up it up African Cichlids. I have no clue which ones to get for my tank, or how many. I currently have a 55g SA tank, with 1 JD, 2 FM's, and 1 Convict, and it's been running great for over a year. I've been researching on this here for a while, and cannot come to a conclusion. My tank is a 37tall(30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 22 3/4), and I am running an AC70 (sponge/carbon/sponge) and an AC50(efhiemsubstrat pro) for bio-filter. Tank is fully cycled from filter media from my 55g SA setup.

How should I set this up? Substrate?? Decor? I know africans like lava rock, and I can get my hands on some large pieces at a good price.

Thanks!!!

Yeah...I see shellies seems to be the consensus among other posts on here with similar tanks. Pool filter sand from Home Depot will do right? What about pH buffering? My tap is a 7.0.

Use Crushed Coral as the substrate, and in the filter too; that will knock it up about .6 or .8 depending on hardness

i'd prefer an all male aulonocara variety...

it is a little too small for that...

ph, well stable is much better than high... if you are willing get agronite... or put some crushed coral in the filter... really stable is the most important.

why is the PH 7. water softener or striaght from tap that way... if it is tap, then the fish store will have them in 7 as well... also put in some limestone rock... texas holey rock will also raise the ph... and shells...

I meant my tap pH is 7.0. I willing to pretty much try anythings...I have been leaning towards a crushed coral substrate.
