I've been hemming and hawing abit on what to do with my 37T tank.. it's the standard footprint of a 29 but taller ( was originally the marineland kit) I have a hagen T5 twin tube light, penguin 200, heater. some dead rock from when I did SW years ago. I'm either going to go FW planted or considered going back to SW ( blame my husband)

1. will my lighting/filtration be good enough?
2. suggestions on skimmers?

I'de like to do a rock "wall" along the back and add some mushrooms, and a few beginner friendly corals. A pair of black percula clowns, royal gramma, and a mandarin goby for fish. then either some sexy shrimp or peppermint shrimp. For the most part my husband would be in charge of the tank ( he's new to fish but like a duck to water) And I've been out of SW long enough to second guess myself.

What do you guys think?

A pair of black percula clowns, royal gramma, and a mandarin goby i definetely do not reccomend this fish, it feeds exclusively on copepods and would need a very large established tank to survive for fish. then either some sexy shrimp or peppermint shrimp. sounds cool For the most part my husband would be in charge of the tank ( he's new to fish but like a duck to water) And I've been out of SW long enough to second guess myself.

will you also be adding some live rock to seed the 'dead' rock?

i would go saltwater, im tearing down my 29 planted and doing another s/w tank "just one more" famous last words

1. will my lighting/filtration be good enough?
with the right bulbs in the glo fixture you should be able to keep soft corals. and as for the filter should be fine.
2. suggestions on skimmers?
Tunze 9002 skimmer. preforms very well! i have one on my sumped biocube hqi (total water volume ~46 gallons) and it works great!

Zoa's, shrooms, and xenia are great starter corals

get an ORA breed mandarin. they dont rely on copods and will eat other foods.

pink :D

I would highly suggest upgrading the lighting (specially if it is not t5 HO). On my 38 i have a 250w HQI and a 2x normal output actinic. My lighting setup is on the higher end for the size but personally i wouldnt go any less than 3 or 4 bulb t5 HO since it is a tall tank.

The 2 bulb will really limit your choice in bulbs ie. you will have to have 1 10,000 k bulb and 1 actinic bulb which will cut your light intensity even further.

I promise you that if you enjoy the reef (which you will) you will upgrade your lighting in the future so do yourself a favour and start searching for a used t5HO fixture with at least 3 or 4 bulbs. You will thank me later :)

PS this is coming from someone who has upgraded their lighting several times. Good Luck!

if you plan to upgrade i would go MH or LED personally..........

If you are going reef do yourself a favor and do MH or LED...your going to end up there anyways. Honestly, just do LED. :D

lol, thanks for all the input! I do plan on seeding the tank with some live rock "debris" peices as well as the corals I've been looking at are on decent sized chunks. I was looking at a light fixture that had LEDs as part of it and T5's. I just won't have a chunk of cash like that until after x-mas prolly and wanted to get the tank started and cycling sooner. I mentioned to the hubby that I'de be willing to go SW instead of upgradeing my planted.. and he jumped all over it. So that looks like the plan.

But my live-stock sounds good it seems then? mushrooms and xenia would do good on the T5 high output twin tubes? Eventually I'de like some ricordia mushrooms so upgrading the lighting in a few monthes shouldn't be hard.

Ricordia are funny. I have seen them split under PC and shrivel under MH. I have seen them shrivel under PC and split like mad under MH...I dont really know whats up with those guys.

Yes...those corals should do fine under t5
