I got a free 38 gallon hex in great shape. Not my favorite footprint but a free tank nonetheless. I really am into south/central americans but thought maybe I could do africans in this tank. What is your opinion in this if I get mbuna that don't get too large?
I agree, a planted tank with all community fish. I've seen some planted tanks that are unbelievable with bright green grass, driftwood centerpiece, bright green moss on the wood. I have never done one myself but would imagine that it takes a good bit of work.
If you decide to go with an African fish, I would go with small very young yellow labs, they are beautiful and eventually you can move them once they are too large.
i would not put mbunas in a hex tank--its the wrong shape (footprint) for them--they love to swim the length of the tank and a hex would drive them to madness lol. imo any lake malawis are just not suited for a hex--like one of the previous posters mentioned a great planted community tank with some long driftwood would really look great!
when i see hex tanks, i think of angel fish or community--any type of fish that are not strong fast swimmers and sortof float around.. please post some pics when you get it set up--cant wait to see it!
Thanks for the advice. I am not interested in doing a community tank. For now I am using it as a growout for a few 1 inch central/south american cichlids. I think it will eventually be a convict breeder tank.
why not get a big rock formation right in the middle with tons of holes and do some shell dwellers or do some of the smaller mawalis? I only say that because i have seen that done before, i think it was a 50 hex or close to it, the guy had it custom made and had a rock formation that was just made for the middle. He started out with a breeding group of Demasoni in it, now he has a bunch of shellies. Looks really cool and the things breed like crazy!!!
To keep their aggression down they shouold be kept in groups of 15+, which would make a 38 too small. I wouldnt keep Demasoni in a hex of any size. They are the most aggressve when it comes to footprint size.
i know but i have seen it done, in fact in i have a 55g right now with about 10, 2m 8f, and they are doing great, all are around 3in and they fight once in awhile but i have found that if you just keep them alone and give plenty of rocks you dont have to have that many.
