I have a 39 Gallon Tall tank. Right now it has One firemouth who has been there for six months, three clown loaches (they came with the tank and they aren't that big yet), and six rummynose tetras.

I tried adding angels and that did not work though my firemouth is more bark than bite. I already tried a small convict but he picked on the firemouth too much.

What kind of cichlids would work in this tank? I can move the rummy nose to a different tank. There are no live plants.

Not much room to work with, but maybe another FM and breed them? How about a dwarf crenicichla? That might be HOT!

i would say....nothing, you have a weird tank set-up. hmmmmm clown loach that arn't big YET.

here's a stab in the dark....sell the FM and set it up as a nice peaceful drowning in candyfloss type tank?

FM being in there for 6month will OWN the tank OR another fish will fight it to OWN the tank.....its a lose lose unless you TRY what spizzed said. breeding wouldn't be a good idea if you want to keep the other fish free from death or tourture

I THINK the dwarf crenicichla would get bullied .....hmmm

I'd change the clowns with kuhli loaches. They're a much better alternative and you don't have to worry about space. Replace the firemouth with apistogrammas or blue rams. Move the rummies in a long tank and get a few pencilfish.

I assumed by him noting that the loaches were small, two things. 1: He knows how big loaches get. 2: He plans on upgrading. I could be wrong, but I try to read between the lines. Great suggestions guys. I like the size of this tank!

P.S. drinkypoo, the creni would be just fine ;)

I never assume.........just set's up dissapointment. EVERYONE "plans" on upgrading lol

AND i sense a cichlid challenge.....get the creni if it lives spizzed wins if it dies i win.

and if you accidently get the 20" cenri wooops yo bad lol

Considering I've had dwarf pikes kill much larger jack dempseys before, I deffinately wouldn't bet on the firemouth.

But like big pikes, there are differant aggression levels with the dwarves.

What's the footprint on a 39 gallon high? I have a 38 gallon that is 36"x15"x16" ... so I am guessing it's what, like a taller 29 gallon?

get a severum of similar size to the firemouth. they are peaceful, and will not bohter your firemouth.

It seems I have two options. The tanks dimensions are 30X12X27. (it's actually a 37 gallon I guess).

One possibility is that I completely start over. What could be a fun stocking in this tank? One bigger cichlid? A breeding pair of fm's or other cichlid? Blue Acaras? I want the tank to be interesting and not look empty. And I know I want cichlids.

Or I took out all of the fish besides the firemouth. Does that give me more options? If I decided to get another fm, how do I sex the one I have and the one I'm getting? My fm is very colorful. Also, how do you add another fm without the one I have harrassing it too much? Do they realize it's a possible mate right away and play nice?

I realize that clown loaches get too big for my tank, but I got my aquarium off of craigslist and the guy gave me the loaches because he didn't want them. How big can they get in my tank before I have to take them to the fish store? I don't want to stunt their growth.

Oh, I forgot to mention there is a small red tail shark.
