I don't want to silicone the background into place. Is their a way to put 1 into a pre-existing tank without emptying the tank of water? Would suction cups work?

If you use thin profiled one, you can just jam it in place. Be sure to measure inside height when doing it.

I tried to put one on my 150 gal only emptying half the water, and using large C clamps.
That sucker came flying out like a breaching whale as I added water.

I installed my slimline from Designs by Nature per the directions on their site. Simply remove equipment, decor, and drain water 6" then press bg against the glass. Before you let go it is imperative to place substrate against the bg otherwise it will become a projectile.
Ok thanks, I was just looking at designs by natures instructions. I'm gonna buy from them. How thick does the substrate need to be? The background is about 1" thick. Will 1" of sand suffice? Or do I need 2"?
I have around 2" but 1" will probably work. Its best to cut 1/8" bigger and jam it in there so that its harder to just pop it.
I was just asking for clarification. Chances are I will have at least 2" of substrate. But I like to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
In case you have acrylic, be mindful that this material pushed hard enough will scratch it.
