Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum so forgive me if I made a mistake but I was wondering...is it possible to have a 3D background in an established tank without draining the water?

The first time I tried to install one, I only drained the tank half way, after I had the background in and started to refill, it shot out of the tank like a breached whale.
My 3D is the kind made in Sweden, and very buoyant, 3-6" thick.
Best to drain the tank, and silicone it on very thoroughly. Be very generous with the silicone, clamp it tightly, and let it cure over night. If you don't it can come loose and fish will disappear behind it, and you need to start all over.
For my 6'tank, I needed 2 tubes of GE1 silicone.

Yes it is!! Should add the one on the left side is held down by 3 landscaping bricks zip tied to the btm of the background it's 1"+ foam type stuff. The ones on the right are just suspended from above all are removable within minuets if I want them out to do a good cleaning or fish removal..

Yes depending on the material. I bought a tank with a rubber type background in it that is not attached to the back but is dense so it sinks and stands upright due to its shape. Sorry im not home soi cant get a full shot but you can see some of it and the detail it has in this pic

I've got a rubber back one also, and love it. It's not even a 1/2 in thick but it looks really good. I just used tiny screws to attach it to my acrylic tank. I'm pretty sure it would have stayed by itself.
I got it from universal rock. They're in Texas and it wasn't very expensive.

Wow. Those 3D backgrounds look amazing! Looks like my best bet would be to get a rubber-type 3D background, right? Do you guys have any recommendation on where to get one? Unfortunately at this point, I don't have a spare tank to put my fish in so I can't drain the water. Currently the back of my tank has a textured blue-ish paint and some parts have chipped off. I'm afraid to attempt taking out the paint by either scraping or using chemicals so I thought of just covering it with a 3D background.

Thanks for all your help!

Hey guys, sorry for the double post but I wanted to ask your opinion about a 3D background I found that was said I can install it on an established tank. It's made by the company called Designs by Nature. I was wondering if anyone has tried it before and is it true that you don't need to silicon it?

Here's the link to the installation instructions:

And here's the one I was thinking of getting:

I'm still trying to look for rubber background like you mentioned but I'm not having much luck. :(

I have a few of their backgrounds and they are great, They have one they call rocky sheet it is about 1/2" at the thickest point and is held in place with magnets at the top and the substrate holds the bottom. It is flexible so you can bend around the top braces. When you receive the background which ever you choose will be really dirty and will need a good scrubbing before placing in the tank. I also have some that are silicone in place and some that is held by suction on the back glass.

The one u were thinking of getting, says it needs to b siliconed in
Check Universal Rock. That's where I got my rubber back one from.
I think the background was called Rocky Background
