I use the black t-grade colorquartz with all my tanks and have never had a problem with it. Given, I haven't kept rays - just african cichlids and a huge fire eel. It's safe for fish, as long as you wash it well. To the touch it doesn't feel sharp enough to damage a ray's underbelly. I'm kicking around the idea of keeping/breeding motoros and I will most likely keep the colorquartz in (what to do with the frontosa colony is another issue).
