Hi I heard that 3m colorquartz grade t sand is very good for freshwater aquarium, but I also heard its discontinue but any chance anybody know where I can get some ? If not I was thinking of Tahitian moon light sand but black is easy to get but I need white and its almost impossible. I was thinking of play sand as well but not sure if its a good idea, any suggestion or recommendation is highly appreciated

Unless you have small fish like tetra's I'd avoid play sand. It's too fine, it gets stirred up easily and then sucked up by the filter. Pool Filter Sand is the best for a natrual beach color sand. Leslie's sell's it for about $10/50lbs. Call Rams Flooring in Baltimore. They had a bunch in stock when it was discountined.

Chicken Grit!!!!!!

I use it in all my tanks... Is white with black specs, and kinda sparkly.

Here are pics of the bag, and the actual grit.. from online.. my chicken grit never has brown in it; but the bag posted is the brand I use.

It's $6 for a 50lb bag.

I get it at Agway/Feed Stores.

It's crushed granite.

ummm, i have half a bucket of sand (i thought it was plenty for my 75g). its kinda dirty and requires some rinsing but if you want it, it's yours. i was just about to throw it out. I believe its made by caribsea. let me know.

thank you very much ado124, but I have 175gallon I would still be short. How is the sand working for you? Any problem and did it require rinsing as the bag state ready to use in aquarium ..

I rinsed it just to get rid of any small dust particles. I wanted it to settle as quick as possible. My filter intake is pretty low so sand would get into my filter and caused problems. I had to replace a lot of impeller shafts on my fluval

Its half the density of sand. That means real light, probably never be all settled to the bottom unless you have tiny fish and low flow filters.

try pool filter sand. It's cheap. $10 for 50 pounds. You can find it at any pool supply stores.
It's heavy and settles fast, doesn't get suck in HOB filters. There's also a lot less crap in it compared to play sand. You don't have to rinse it nearly as much.

I think thats what I will do, except for I call all the leslie's pool supplies and they all got brown/ tan sand, no go on the white sand. my zip is 20001
