Hey everyone,

I am looking into buying a large tank and I am getting frustrated with all the options.

Most of the larger cichlids such as Jags and Flowerhorns states requirements of 6 foot tanks which I don't really have the room for. 4 feet tanks will fit more nicely in my living room

Will a 120 gallons tank (48 1/2 x 24 1/4 x 25 1/2) (L x W x H) be a nice tank or am I going to regret not getting the 108 gallons (60 x 18 x 24) or the 125 gallons tanks (72 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 24)

All tanks are roughly $500 canadian with tax.

Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

If you going to keep large cichlids, I have to highly reccommend you make room for a 6' tank. To answer your question, "Yes you will regret getting the 4' tank". A 72"x24" footprint is the most ideal IMHO. Happy tank hunting.

I've got a 125 (6.5 feet) and it looks big with just 5 cichlids I have but my cichlids are getting BIG. For cichlids, sometimes having a bigger tank is better because there is more room to retreat. That extra 2 feet makes a huge difference. They need length more than height.

get a 6' tank no question, when getting multiple large cichlids, which will have territory's it is important to have the length, the width doesn't matter as long as it's at least 18".

If you want a "wet pet," a four foot tank would be fine for many species as long as it is a 75 gallon because they are deep enough to house a larger cichlid. Just stay away from a 55 gallon as it will really limit your options.

Your right about a 4 footer having a lot of advantages....48" light tubes.....easier to encorporate into the room.....ext. If those are major conciderations for you then there are a lot of very nice large chiclids that can live comfortably in one. Just be aware of the limitations and keep fewer and more carefully selected fish. Avoid adding 'impulse buys' and you can have a very nice looking and healthy 120 for a lot of years.

Having personal experience with both, I still say the answer to your question is, "Yes you will regret not geting the 6' tank, it makes more difference than it sounds like on paper". Whatever your decision though, good luck and happy fish keeping. :)

i would say the 48x24 would be better than the longer narower tanks. the 24 wide on my 6 foot tank makes alot more swimming area
