Will this work in a 180? Can they live together for life? I am looking for two more fish to complete my set up.

that is a doable pair and you should have plenty of room left for any number of tankmates, what were you thinking?

should be fine, but while the bgk is young you will have to make sure to put some extra food right by it as they can be shy about coming out when they are little and he may not get enough food, as long as he is getting enough food he should grow fast enough to somewhat keep up with the lima, if possible i would suggest growing him out a bit in a smaller tank so you can monitor his feeding better, especially since some coming from the pet store still need to be weaned onto pellets (i was lucky in that department as mine was already weaned but then the frikin jewel pair i had for breeding feeders for my Ca/Sa cichlids turned on him one day and tore him up so badly i had to put him down at 6in:cry:) both of them are awesome fish you just have to be attentive with the bgk and be patient as he may not come out very much during the day until he is bigger

I have one 9-10 inch fire eel in the tank that is REALLY peaceful, one severum about 2 inches, one 3 inch blood red parrot, one 3 inch leopard ctenopoma, 3 tinfoil barbs about 3 inches each and 5 clown loaches about 5 inches each. I just saw some bgk's and lima shovelnose at the pet store in the 3-4 inch range and though about getting one of each to finish off my tank.

Wow, a bgk can be weaned onto pellets? People are always telling me to feed it bloodworms and chopped red wiggler worms if I buy one. I use carnivore pellets in my tank and break it into small, bite-sized pieces for the smaller fish in the tank. All of my fish eat it save the fire eel. I never use feeders save chopped up earthworms. Are you telling me that I can get a bgk to eat these carnivore pellets if I buy it? How would I do that? Will the lima shovelnose eat carnivore pellets?

yes they can def be weaned onto pellets, i dont know about lima but i would think they could too, ask your petstore what they are currently feeding it. not sure how to do it exactly since my guy was my first bgk and he was already weaned but i would imagine it would be like with any other fish, i would first feed it with whatever frozens you have an let it settle into the new tank first so that its not dealing with stress of new tank and new diet at same time, then once hes settled in you could go on to either fast him for a few days and try pellets, or mix pellets in with a couple blood worms so when he sucks in the one he gets the other as well, (and of course this would all be when all lights are off as this probably the only time you will get him to eat anyways since there are other more robust eaters in the tank

Limas will eat anything. BGK's have big bellies - so do limas !! - so if you feed your BGK well every night, he will get used to a big meal every night (i.e. his stomach will expand) and so he'll be very hungry every night. Then just give it pellets instead of its usual foods, or some of both. Just do this for one night at a time, then feed it the usuall foods the next night. Do this a few times and it will eat whatever you want it to eat.
This is a much better way than starving to get any fish to eat what you want, and works every time (nearly).

The fuller their bellies get, the hungrier they are when their bellies arent full, and if they're getting what they want, they'll top up with what you want. Then you can gradually give them more of what you want.

BTW limas are a shoaling fish, and do much better in groups.
