I picked this guy up a couple of weeks ago, and things seem to be going quite well. I have him on pellets, although he'll only eat a certain type at the moment. I should probably be giving him some frozen food as well, but I'm worried about fouling the tank if he doesn't eat it. Anyways, two questions:

  1. I have the tank temperature set at 80[SUP]o[/SUP]F. I've read that the tank should be warmer for arowana of this size. Can anyone please confirm the proper temperature for a juvenile?
  2. I read somewhere that aros do best in a tank with no cover, because they are able to breathe fresh air instead of the high CO[SUB]2[/SUB] air in a tank with a tight cover. Is this really anything to worry about? I could run a reptile cage lid, but it seems a little overkill and my lights could get wet.

Thanks.

First and foremost, you MUST have a cover. The jardini will jump out without one. As far as temp, 80 degrees is fine for the life of the fish. If the aro is taking pellets, don't worry about frozen foods, pellets are the way to go.

i keep my 4" jardini @ 82F and only feed him with hikari food sticks. About cover or uncover the top, that is a good question since I haven't noticed someone mentioned about that in the past and love to learn more from the experts as well.

Pellet as main diet and occasional frozen/live as treat.grow out with tankmates if you want it in a community tank, results may vary from fish to fish. Goodluck

A cover is a must as they jump. When they get larger, you will need to add weight to the cover. If you have strong lights, consider adding some floating plants to increase their sense of security. Aros are known to knock themselves out due to being spooked and crashing hard into the tank cover.

I do have some floating plants for cover and the aro usually lurks under them. At what size do you typically need to start weighting the covers? I have the typical galss lids at the moment. Thanks. The only tankmates currently are a couple of +/- ful size SDs, which the jardini already bullies sometimes. I should add some more dithers. I really don't want to have to keep this guy alone for life. But the early signs aren't encouraging.
