My 40 breeder was supposed to be the future home for figure 8 puffers and bumblebee gobies but last night that all changed.

In another tank I have a pair of Kribensis, 3 Pictus cats and a small school of zebra danios. Well the Kribs just had their first batch of fry last night which was pretty exciting. My plan was to just let the pictus eat the fry and not worry about it but that all changed when my girlfriend laid eyes on the fry yesterday.

So after her begging and pleading and cooking me my favorite meal last night I decided to move the Pictus to the 40 and let the Kribs raise their fry.

Now I need some suggestions as to what to put in the 40 with my 3 pictus cat's. I'm trying my best to stay away from cichlids as I've had so many but I keep coming back to them. I need some creative outside of my thought box ideas.

I've never had a community tank so that's an option but my gut is telling me to go with an EBJD, a firemouth and a school of tetras.

sounds to me like you need to wait for her to go to sleep and reintroduce the pictus, let them go ham on the fry take em back out and in the morning say "well i guess they ate all their babies"

That's hilarious but it took me forever to catch the damn Pictus. I spent about an hour trying to scoop them in a modified milk jug.

I used to have tons of trouble catching fish in tanks but I learned recently that most fish, especially puffers, will chase a laser pointer like dogs do. Pictus are apparently immune to this though as they just ignored the laser pointer.

I'm actually thinking of putting a couple schools of 10-20 fish like cardinal tetras and a couple of larger fish and a Gourami would fit that bill perfectly. The long strands that hang down in front of the Gourami's pectoral fins drives me absolutely crazy though.
