Hello, longtime lurker first time poster.

I have a baby senegal Bichir and baby pink kissing gourami (odd couple, I know) and I just purchased a 40 gallon breeder for the two of them. And I may or may not add 1 more senegal to the tank once everything is established.

I run a Fluval 205 canister in the 29 gal. they're currently housed in. I figured this tank upgrade would be an opportunity for me to try another brand. I work at a large pet store chain, so the only options available to me at 15% discount are Eheim Ecco's, Rena XP's, Magnums, and Fluvals. I've heard very good things about XP's and I'm leaning towards them.

My main question is how big do I go. The thing I'm most concerned about is the flow rate. What kind of current do XP3 and XP4's produce? I've always preferred to over-filter my tanks, but would I be massively overdoing it if I went with an XP4? I need something that won't blow my gourami around :headshake

Thanks

Ive hear about 190 gph for an xp3 with media. Might be a good match. An Xp2 might suffice for a while. Id recommend a larger tank in the future though. Im told the Xp4 almost has the same flow as the xp3 except it has more media which may not be necessary for the smaller bio load you have. Its up to you. Id go XP3

Howdy,

I am running an Eheim 2217 on my 40 gal breeder, and I couldn't be happier. :)

If you use a spray bar the current won't be bad.

I have had an XP1, XP2, and a couple XP3. All were great filters, I just decided I like sumps better.

I would say an XP3 would be great, might be a little strong in flow but once the media gets some stuff built up and flow slows a little you'd be good to go. The flow slows down quite a bit fairly quick if you run fine pads in the first tray as well.

I am sure others brands would be good but I haven't used them.

Nevermind, I'm a moron. Apparently the XP's come with a spraybar, correct? If so then current should be a non-issue.

Thanks to everyone for the input, I think I'm going to go with an XP3. I was eyeballing Eheim, but the ones available to me at this time are drastically overpriced compared to the Rena's (even with my store discount applied). Maybe in the future I'll pick one up when I upgrade my tank again.

Eheims simply are more expensive, it has to do with build quality. I have a 2211 that's been running for 19 years straight, still going strong. The larger investment will pay off in the long run, and it's a filter you can trust.

Happy filtering,
