40 gal breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well my wife really wants a discus tank but I will be doing all the work. I have an extra 40 in the garage. How many and what kind could I put in that tank?

IMO you should start with a 55 gallon and no less. A 40 breeder works alright for a breeding pair, or to raise out small fish, but it's not a good size for long-term discus keeping.

It's always best to start with groups of discus or you'll run into aggression issues. Discus form a pecking order and if you have less than 4 fish you're most likely going to have problems. I always recommend starting with 6.

40 will be fine as a breeder tank.

Once the frys start growing, you'd want to move them into their own tank anyways.

So 40g for just the breeders will be perfect. Many breeders I know use 40gs. :)
