I have two Penguin 200 HOB filters on my 40 gallon Firemouth tank right now and I am having problems with the water flow. I have them on the back of the tank on opposite ends and it seems that the poop and debris does not always make it to the strainers. My question is what would be the optimum placement of the filters to generate a good water flow and allow for easy cleanup/siphoning. Also is two filters overkill for this size tank? I always thought too much filtration was better than just enough.

The stock in the tank is as follows:
1 Firemouth
3 Swordtails
4 Cory Cats
1 BN Pleco (poop machine)

Add a powerhead to help circulate. Moving the filters around isn't going to do much.

whenever you say that it doesnt make it to the strainers, do you mean that it is stuck in the gravel or that it is floating around in the water? If it is in the gravel, that is usual, youll need to do regular gravel cleanings to do that. If the objects are floating in the water, i recomend as metriacliman said and add a powerhead.

150 gal p/h should do it..while your doing that go the extra mile and attach a small (ati hydro3 size) sponge filter for polishing
