Here is a picture of the tank I am wanting to plant. It has pool filter sand in it right now, but I plan to mix in flourite or something like it. Any ideas on plants and fish for the tank are welcome. I have 2 65 watt compacts going on the tank, but I am waiting for the light clips to ship out. THe second is just a picture of my 2.5 gallon planted, which I posted for the heck of it.

What kind of design do you want for the tank? That will be some important information as to suggestions for livestock.

At three watts of light per gallon, I am wondering if you will be running co2? As for substrates, I would consider removing a pound or so of the sand and mixing it in a container with the plant substrate of your choice. This would help prevent you from spending a lot of cash on a mix that you won't like with the sand.

In terms of plants, with that much light (and co2), you should be able to grow just about anything.

Do I see a return tube in your tank from a sump?

Yes, the tank has a 20 gallon sump with a wet/dry I built. I'm not exactly sure what biotype I want yet, but I'm leaning towards maybe Amazon river right now. I'm not sure if I will be running co2. I have a cylinder marked for nitrogen that I need to see if I can trade in for a co2 tank. Then I would only have to buy the regulator combo set. I'm looking to keep the costs down on the whole project, due to the fact I am only a senior in high school... I think I might go for a DIY subtrate with clay I been hearing about.

If you have a W/D then you need to avoid plants that need high co2 levels, and installation of a co2 unit will run a lot of money. The majority of the co2 will be gassed off by the surface agitation given by the w/d.

Very true. I have java fern that will be going in there on possibly some driftwood or the rocks right now. I might put some amazons in the back and then some type of plant that will make a carpet in the front. I know that combo all doesn't really go together....but I think it will work.

I'm considering selling it because I will not have time for 6 tanks next year when I go to college. Not sure yet, but the set up has over $500 worth of stuff that went into making it so far. I just bought 2 huge driftwood pieces I am putting in my 75 gallon. I think I want to focus on the 75 as my main tank and not the 40 gallon, but I am still not sure yet. If I decide to let the set up go, I'm going to let it go for about $400. I'd really like to make the 40 gallon saltwater because it is a sweet set up for that, but I don't think I have the money right now for it. I built the 40 gallon set up because I enjoy messing with fish tanks ever since I got my first one when I was 9. If anyone has any comments about what I should do, just post them!
