Originally floated the idea of placing a sump on a 40B but I am a little hesitant due to it being my first one along with the tank being on carpet in my apartment. Which one would you recommend going with a sump or canister filter for a 40 gallon tank?

Filters don't keep the tank water clean, they just move the surface so that oxygen gets mixed into the tank water. The large, weekly water change is the true filter, because you're removing the old, polluted water and replacing it with pure, treated tap water. So, if you take good care of the water, you don't need much in the way of filtration. Your tank would be fine with a dual sponge filter at a cost of $10.00. Consider this instead of dropping $100.00 or more for an expensive gizmo that's really only taking in polluted tank water and replacing it with water that's a little less polluted.

This above is true, sponges alone can work, though mechanical filtration in a canister will be superior to a couple sponges. Also will provide more flow, which some fish need and some don't. The sponges also take up real estate in the tank ,and if he was going for a biotope or natural look, they would stick out. I guess it depends on the OP's priorities. Filtration absolutely is no replacement for large weekly water changes, fully agree there.

Personally I would go for an aquaclear 70 hang on back filter. Will be a little easier to maintain then a canister, will provide all the filtration you need for the tank, and is quiet and reliable.

I would HOB, unless your looking to overstock, or breeding. Then a sump becomes, a hospital, and nursery. With alot of options left open.
