40-gallon freshwater tank - fish stocking suggestions?

I have a new 40-gallon freshwater tank that currently only has a pleco and a Spiny Eel in it. Any suggestions on what fish I should stock it with?

Depends on the look you're going for. Usually small American cichlids like Rams would work.

It's a common 4.5" pleco, and a 4" zigzag spiny eel.

You might consider Aequidens pulcher (blue acara) for that size tank. I like the blue rams as well, but can never keep them alive for long.

Bolivian Rams seem to be much hardier, IME

Maybe a pair of a smaller Cichlid like a convict, salvinis or firemouths ECT. Also you might want to consider eventually moving the pleco as Commons get very large (18 plus inches)

Yeah, once I get my bigger tank I will probably move the pleco into that one.

Dump the eel and go fancy goldfish. Love my 40.
