Hey Everyone,

I may have the opportunity soon to get two captive bred hystrix pups for the upcoming 180-240 gallon crossing fingers for the 240. However wont be having the tank in till the end of this year. So just wanted to ask if you guys think two hystrix rays can be kept in a 40 gallon breeder under these conditions for two - three months.

40 Gallon Breeder
-Bare Tank
-Properly Cycled
-Air Bubbles (Since sump will not be used for this tank)
- Three Aqua Clear Hang Ons (1 with all pond matrix from an established tank/ 2 filters with just sponges) be stocked
-3x a week 5 gallon water changes (Prime for conditioning)
-Feedings will be 3-5 times daily...food depending on what the owner will have them started on along with healthier foods like shrimps and hopefully pellets.

The filters will properly be stock with established media.

So what do you guys think? Will it work for a few months? Any tips or suggestions appreciated. I used to have motoros in the past and also have done tons of research.

Thanks A Million

I would say yes (but its risky). I would do at least 50% total wc weekly (more as they get bigger) instead of 15 gal. I would feed 2x daily. Be sure to remove uneaten food. Never change all 3 filters at the same time.

Hope the tank is up and running now. You will have to watch parameters CLOSELY. Especially for the first month.

Hope your sure on the upgrade though...

The 40 gallon is not yet running as im waiting on the owner to let me when his ray gives birth as well if he plans on holding them till they are on pellets....if he is able to hold them the i probably wont need a holding tank as the process probably will take a month or two and should be able to have the floor done where the tank is going.
Ok if i do use a holding tank defintly will up the water changes as well as remove leftover food via siphon whichwould also create extra mini water changes. One of the filters will be filled with already established pond matrix from my other tank.
Thanks for your help

I think you will be fine I have my reticulated stingray in a 40 gallon breeder until I remove the gravel out of my 125 when I'm in my hometown and I'm using one aqua clear 110 and a penguin bio wheel 350 on the 40 and haven't had any water quality problems yet she's been in it for about 6 weeks

Should be fine. I would add some substrate though-for the rays, and adds extra surface area for the good bacteria to grow on. My last litter of 2 hystrix pups were in a well established 15 gal for a few months.
BTW, I'll have some more hystrix pups in the near future:)

I use fine gravel I collected from a local river. It's mostly 1-2mm grain size.

Why not just ask the sellor to hold the pups for you until u get your big yank sorted? Seems like a much simpler plan. What if the pups are born tommorow??

Then youll have to rush the tank cycle
