i was thinking of possibily starting a 40 gallon long with pike cichlids....
anyone have any ideas about what could work.. or would it be too little room

or maybe some other predatory fish ideas...
or something that looks sweet...

basically open to suggestions, cause i don't know what i want to do with it.

You'd have a tough time keeping more than one of any pike in that size tank. Possibly a pair of regani but even they grow to 6" (males) and it would be difficult to keep more than one in a 40 as they matured.

You could try a couple of small Belly Crawlers but you'd need to have lot's of hiding places and watch them close as eventually one would get the upper hand.

any possible suggestions for stocking a regani pike with some fish?
or would 1 be a bad idea, just stay away from them?

I would definetely say you would be ok with one, you could chance it with 2 regani. You could always take one back to a LFS if tank became overstocked...

Most people breed their regani in 20 longs believe it or not, they are often called the "peaceful pike." I have yet to see this though.

You'd want some dither fish, dwarves know they are small and can be shy ... but will still eat smaller tetras even if they can't swallow them, if the head is big enough they were still kill them. Thus you'd be better off with larger tetras like red eyes, columbians, or diamonds. A nice big school and group of regani's (if a pair forms you'll need to remove the extras) and a group of say green brochis cats to clean up the frozen food the pikes miss ... well planted ... would be a great looking tank.
