40 gallon long.

I was given a 40 gallon long from a relative, however the bottom brace is broken, like cracked and loosely fitting now. I could probably just popped it off if I wanted. I've never dealt with a broken bottom brace, if I take it off will it be strong enough to hold water? The top is still fully intact and in good condition.
