Hi I am new to this forum but I would like some advice please.

My tank recently cracked and when I get my replacement I was thinking of having some Cichlids and would like some suggestions for what I could put in it along with suitable tank mates .

Thanks JD72

Depending on the dimensions, you'd have a few options from between the small-medium range of cichlids.

Central Americans you have staples such as convicts, firemouths, also arguably a JD if your tank has generous width.

My favourite among south Americans is the blue acara, really rewarding fish that does well in community set-ups.

Thanks, The tank is 101cm x 41cm x 51cm (40 x 16 x 20).

I was thinking that a JD would probably a bit big but I do like Firemouths, what sort of stock levels would recommend .

If going with firemouths, you could go a mating pair, or, if you aquascape your tank with hiding spots, plants and sight breaks you could probably do 2-3 all males or all females. Its difficult to predict sometimes based on individual fish personality. I had a big firemouth who wouldn't glance twice at other firemouths, but hated my Oscar.

Another female..

I have some tetras and barbs with my ellioti (similar to firemouth, though perhaps a little more aggressive) also a couple bristlenose. They have eaten 3 of the cherry barbs over the months, but I started with 8 and now 6 months later I still have 5. The tetras are red eye tetra and they are too big for them to bother and too quick I think too. My male elliota has to be approaching 5", the female 4". Reason I said another female is because with my pair the male was a bit rough with the female after she laid eggs, to the point I had to remove her. Perhaps with multiple females that aggression might be spread between them.

I never notice the ellioti chasing the dithers, oops I also have one swordtail. Swordtails do cohabitate with firemouths in the wild, they may work well. My one swordtail was a rescue from another of my tanks so hasn't been in for too long so I can't categorically claim they will be safe but I suspect if they are large enough (not juvies) they would be ok. Think green ones are the natives.

I've been thinking and would this be good to have in my tank. Also just found out my tank is 45 gallons
