I was watching this video on youtube of an AMAZING looking tank... and then my jaw hit the floor... for some reason, the owner... instead of adding bio-media to the sump, has filled it with AIR POWERED SPONGE FILTERS....!!! The bio mass these filters are supporting is completely insane...! I can't imagine why you'd decide to do this!!

The madness begins at 2m 34s in this video.

:nilly:

Sponge filters do a great job of filtering tanks. Providing you use the right size sponge filters, you should be able to house plenty of benificial bacteria.

Also, it looks as though he has a sump running in there too. I would say that he has plenty of filtration going on there.

you didn't watch the video then...?

dozens of clown loach.... huge catfish, arrowana, giant gourami.

they all look in rude health though.... makes you wonder how much everyone wastes on filters if a few sponges can do all this...

I did watch the video. I have also ran many tanks off of sponge filters. Those sponges look capable of about 80 or so gallons each. Plus there is another sump going. Water quality is also something to consider, just because I said there was adequate filtration, doesn't mean that the owner takes care of his fish by doing water changes. I was just stating that sponge filters are capable of filtering large tanks as well as small tanks and that he has other filtration present. The first sump would well make up for what he is not getting with the sponge filters.

I have XL sponge filters in all my large tanks and bins. They're rated for 450 gallons each. The sponges are 9x9x9", the standpipes are 2.5x20", and the bases hold one pound of ballast weight. These pumps run off a blower that can provide the minimum .25 cfm of airflow they need to run properly.
I run them as backup in case the main filter cuts out. I also transplant seeded sponges to condition new tank setups.

sponge filters are great. they do a great job.

Looking at the guys filtration, i think there are more to it than sponge filters. Look at all those PVCs.. its gotta be leading to something.

what he said ^^

:eek::eek::eek::eek: that thing is huge!!! That'd be cool in a pond or something. lol.

Is that huge block of sponge used in a diy filter or did you buy the filter complete from a lfs? I wouldn't mind trying that in my sump. I use 2 hydrosponges with a maxijet 1200 in my stingray grow out tank and it is doing a great job (rays are healthy). Don't sell sponges short for filtration, they can support a lot of bacteria and they are great for mechanical filtration.
