400 watt metal halide questions

I was wondering if a 400 watt metal halide grow lamp will work as a lighting system for my 40 gallon glass cube. It would be suspended from my ceiling.

I'm growing some plants in a 46g with 30watts of flourescent light. You may have a hard time finding a balance in the tank with that much light though. That's way more light than you'll ever need in a 40 gallon tank.
