Hi all, great community you have here that I'm hoping can answer some of my questions. I'm a long time saltwater hobbyist/professional and have maintained nearly every species of reef fish available at one point or another in my time. However, my knowledge of freshwater fish, particularly native N American species, is limited to what I remember going fishing as a kid in California.

I currently maintain a 4000g system at 64 degrees with North American freshwater fishes. The system is split into two tanks, the larger of the two is approximately 3000g and contains a paddlefish, buffalo, short and longnose gar, sturgeon, crappie, sunfish, and a channel catfish. The smaller tank is about 400g and contains yellow perch.

My questions pertain to stocking in the larger tank. I am not very happy with the idea of the paddlefish long term in this tank--although it is circular and about 10 feet cross, it is not large enough to handle him once he is full grown. What other fishes would you add to this tank, and how might they impact the resident population? No ideas are too crazy, so throw them all out there please. They don't necessarily need to be native, for instance, and since I work at a public aquarium fish that would be "illegal" are probably obtainable.

I am thinking that a bowfin (or two?) would be nice to add, as well as some type of larger shoaling fishes like shiners, but this idea probably shows my lack of creativity and/or knowledge. :D Thanks!

what about some rainbows or browns? cudnt do lmb or smb cuz they would eat the bluegills and crappies

you'd have to get bigger minnows like common shiners, golden shiners, maybe even a whole bunch of creek chubs, i am from canada though so my knowledge of american natives isnt as good. maybe even a big school of shad would look great. you could even get some rock bass. have a look at this website, they have amazing photos of native fish http://www.underwaterfishphotos.com/

id absolutely love to see pictures of your tanks, especially your 400 gallon will yellow perch. even PM them to me :) i keep yellow perch aswell currently i have 4 in a 55' im planning on getting a 125 for them, maybe even a rock bass and some schooling minnows

whats the diet of your paddlefish ?

bowfins would be a nice addition. i keep catching them and and really want to put one in my tank. i think there a beautiful, fish and can be really active. i put one in my pond so i can put it in my 330 whens its cycled.
