I have a heating idea. But I need to know, how much does a heater usually run per day? Say my tank I have a 330gal with twin 200 watts. Tank is set to 76degrees and the room is about 70. What would be a good esitmate of its usage during the 24hr period? IE how many minutes it would run in a day period.

My "idea" would run 480watts in 24hrs, or 20 watts a hr.

It is hard to say, there are a few variables:

Tank shape - more surface area will cool faster.
Tank material - acrylic will retain heat better.
Tank lighting - more light = less heat.
Room conditions - stability of temperature and humidity.

The amount of electricity used over time is measured in kilowatt/hours,so 20W over a 24 hour period is .48 KW/Hours. This seems a little bit low to raise 330 gallons 6 degrees, but that is just my gut feeling.

Tell us more about your idea.

Tank shape, rectangle 8'x3' OD
Tank material plywood exterior, pond liner interior, twin plexi windows 3/4"
Tank lighting 3 19watt spirals so not much heat
Room conditions, temp is pretty much the same all hours of the day/

More about my idea no:D Its a secret!

I have to get a digital thermometer first, then get the supplies and test it out on a 10gallon first and see how fast, if at all the water temperature can climb. BUT if my idea works, It will be one hell of a idea! Supplies meaning 10$ worth haha.

I was just hoping for say a basic regular tank how long the heaters run.
