40b sump design

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm assuming that you're mechanical is going into the egg crate. If so I personally would go with your design.

I’m not a fan of filter socks, that is why I have the filter pad on top of sponge and that will all sit on egg crate.

That looks pretty sound to me. The only area that could be troublesome is where your filter pad sits on top of your mech sponge blocks. To me, that is a key area in that set up.

If you remove and clean/replace that filter pad regularly then that's great. If you leave it too long then the build up of crud on top of it may result in your flow being restricted, which can be very bad. Water will flow around it and maybe lead to unfiltered water going straight into your mech sponge blocks. You don't really want those sponge blocks gunking up because you risk eventual flow restrictions again.

Keep on top of your maintanance regarding that filter pad and you should be fine.

I see what you are saying for sure.
I do plan on changing it out on a regular basis, the filter pad that is. Most likely during water changes. I made this area a fairly large surface area of 18”x6” so it would clog up very fast.
man’s on water changes I can ring out the sponges below on water change day.
if it did clog, technically it would just overflow in the the bio media chamber until swapped out.

I’d skip the soft filter pads and egg crate and go with different grades of course to fine Matala Rigid Filter Sheets.

They do better growing bacteria and are rigid enough that you can pull them out and smack them on the sidewalk or blast them with a hose to clean them. You could you a Poret foam sheet on top as a pre filter
