So I've been out of the hobby for a few years, mainly kept Piranha and Tetras. I've got some more time on my hands now so started looking into options in re-entering the hobby of fish keeping again.

Space is somewhat limited so i started looking at a 20-30G tank, ended up going with a 40G breeder since the footprint will give me more options.

I've never kept Cichlids, although for some reason Green Terrors have stood out to me. I've decided to go with a solitary male GT, curious what other fish/dithers you'd recommend keeping with him? Size of GT's I have available to me will be around 2-4".

Tank Specs
40G breeder (36x18x16)
AC110 filter
200w Jager heater
Substrate (undecided...suggestions?)
36" T8 bulb

I wouldn't add anything else, you be pushing it for space as it is. Substrate wise, I'd say darker sand or small gravel. Makes the base color look darker and should help the green really pop

Currently painting the background black, was leaning towards more of a neutral substrate so the fish doesn't look too dark. Do you think a few tetras would work? Was thinking something for him to chase potentially becoming food if he can catch them.

Specs on the e46 :) lol

The e46 has since been sold haha. Was a 330i, pretty much stock, awesome car kinda miss it.

I got curious I have an E36 M3 and an E90 330i. Fun cars. Full of headaches lol

I am partial to my EBJD. Had him for awhile now slower growing though. I also have a couple of little plecos in there and growing out some baby silver dollars.

Just want to chime in here as I have a lone GT in a 55 at the moment. I got him two weeks ago at about 6 1/2 inches and he has been pretty shy hiding most of the time so I added 5 buenos Aires tetras three days ago. Each morning I wake up with one less tetra so make sure they are big enough not to get chomped. They are slow growers so get the biggest one you can I would say. A 40b is really pushing it on space and your bio load is going to be crazy once he gets 7-8 inches. I'm doing water changes every 5 days for now but a week would be tops and that's another 15 gallons to dilute nitrate. Not trying to be discouraging just food for thought that you may want to move him up to a larger tank once he gets bigger.

^ I wouldn't add anything else to your tank. You could maybe put in a few smaller tetras to make him more comfortable, but they would get eaten sooner rather than later

The tank is too small for "dithers". What you're really going to be adding are called "punching bag fish".
