well whilst i wait fer the garage to be cleared fer my 8x3x2 i though i would turn my planted 40 gallon into a reef tank. anyway i am planning on doing this needle wheel skimmer, chiller and lotsa live rock which means that i dont have to use a sump( because i cant anyway anyway i would also have a 312W of t5 tubes so i can add corals. now although corals are hard to start with so is oding water changes so i thought that my boss could set it up and show me how to run it and he said thats fine and that fish are harder to start with in a way as i would have to do water changes and they are a pain in the ass to get the water params right. hes got a 5 foot tank wid corals only and he hasnt done a water change in 3 years!!!

I wouldnt suggest allowing the tank to go that long without water changes. There is alot of params that need to be in cheack the filtration wont fix. Adding freshwater also stimulates the corals to be healthier and grow at a better rate, as well as fish. Next suggestion is to consider at least a hang on filter for mechanical filtration. This will be cleaned very often to prevent a buildup of nitrates. Having a lot of LR is fine, but is not saying you dont have to do water changes, because you really really really should.

no spacd fer hob but i iwll use an internal. he does water tests every week theyve been steady fer the past 3 years and he doesnt even use a hydrometer coz hes got a chiller so no water/ very little warter evaps and when it does he refills wid freshwater so his salt levels are fine.

not really just ive seen so far 2 eamples of reef tanks that have not donw waterchanges fer 2+years one with fish and one without
