Hi all, I'm an experienced fish keeper, however I've NOT kept any cichlids before....

I'm in the process of planning my tank, and I need some help:
Like the title says its a 40gal BR(36x18), and I was thinking about Yellow labs and maybe a few other fish as well? Jewels, convicts, or rustys, have been recomemened to me at my LFS(They can cope with the aggression), but we all know how RELIABLE those folks are! :D

What are your opinions? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If dead set on Africans, stick with them in that size of tank. Americans don't comm well unless large comm tank and then only a few of the tilapias are good for that. If you want Americans, go with semiplamted with Bolivian Rams or another of the impressive looking Apistogramma or a EB acara pair would be cool.

I would do 1m/4f labs in a 36" tank. Have you looked at PS. Salousi? They are a great option for smaller tanks. The saulosi provide blue barred males and yellow females. I think would only put one species in this tank.

If you're dead set on Africans I can't really help but I would suggest German Blue Rams, Gold Rams, or EB rams and then EB acara. The tank would have some serious color
