Well back in september I thought I was only 2 to 3 weeks away from having from tank built in the basement. Well was I wrong, 7 months later and now its starting to look like something. I have a couple of questions if anybody can help out:
I can't decide what I should do for background. I know there are tons of things to choose from but I would like to keep it close to the wall. So what would be the maintenance free way to go? I painted my 230 gallon and had water get behind the paint and bubble so I am kind of worried about painting it. If I go with backing then I would have to use vaseline or something so I don't get water stains. Maybe I should just leave it out from the wall so I can get behind it and maintain and change the backing up over the years.

What kind of lights should a person use for a freshwater tank this size. I went with two Hagen Glo T5 High Output 48" double fluorescent. I was told to maybe go with T5 Tek light 48" with 4 bulbs but they where going to run me $450 a piece including bulbs. So instead of $900 for the Tek it only cost me $335 with bulbs for the Hagen. Does anybody know of a site with good reviews on lighting as I couldn't find too much on the topic?

Here are some pics of the different stages it was at while being built and a couple pics of the 120 gallon sump.

It looks great! What are the dimensions? This is going to be freshwater? Or salt? What fish are you putting in it? If it is freshwater, regular fluorescent lights (several 40 watt bubls) would work fine.

I see you said it will be freshwater. I think making a 3d type background would look really awesome, there are various instructions here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_list.php

Tank looks great.
I see youve got your PS3 out too. NICE :D

If you are looking to have a black back, Limo tint works well & once cured, I haven't see any water bubbles.

I also like the faux nature with styro look, although I have never done one myself (yet)

wow

love it

cant wait to see it filled and stocked!

amazing, just wonderful. Did you build it yourself? Or did you have someone come in and build it? I'd really like to do this, unfortunately, I've never built a tank before, so I don't know how it would turn out. Good job! For the back, I've used a number of different things. The 3d backs are nice, but I'd be afraid of a fish gettin stuck back there. I've painted them black and never had a problem with water unless it was still drying when it got wet. Good luck, and keep us updated!

dimensions? and what was the cost so far you have accumulated building this beast of a tank?

You should DEF stock this with a RTG aro, and some nice rays, maybe a big ass pulcher, but u should captive breed in this bad ass setup! I want it!

Amazing job, keep us updated!
