hello,
i am going to be purchasing a 150 gal tank w/o a filter (5x2x2) this weekend, and i want to get a head start on planning out a filtration system. Currently i have a 45 gal. 6 sided flat back, with 2 oscars (6-7 in. and a 3-4 in.) and a bosemani rainbow. i was thinking that i could use the 45 gal for a wet sump and basically create a giant power filter, with cellulose sponges. do you guys think that would be a good idea? or would a sump with a more diverse filtering media be more beneficial? also i was considering adding a fluidized bed filter to the mix. but only if/when my budget allows for it. what do you think?

Well I will give you my opinion for what it is worth. I have a 125 with a sump. Probably about 25 gallons and it seems to be working great. I run it through a filter sock. And then into the sump. Currently I just have a large plastic tub full of different media. I am building a better setup. I also like the fluidized media. I want to add some of that down the road.

But my tank is clear and water quality seems good. So I think your set up would work great.

Both ideas sound good. I'm just concerned with where the occupants of the 45g will be when setting up the 150g and building the sump.

for media i'd look into ceramic rings. i''m using those on two of my tanks and the params always are good. there is a vender that sells the huge "jumbo" sized ones, id stick some of those in a laundry bag and drop it in your sump.
