I have the chance to get a tank that is 20"x20"30"(measured by seller so not 100%) at a good deal. So I have been thinking what could I use that tank for and the only thing I can think of is Angels.

The math says the tank is around 45-50 gallons and they like the taller tank so it might be a nice fit. A local fish store has some awesome angels for $6 that are about 2" so a group so 5 or 6 would be great. That many adults would be a little much but I can always move out a few if I had to.

I think it would work for a pair.
In a group situation, if a pair decide to breed they can be very hard on other angels if tank space is a little limited.
But I think a pair should be OK.
Fully grown angels are not small fish.

2 might work. They really won't reach their potential in any thing smaller than a 75. They get mean when they breed. Once they do you'll be able to tell because every other fish in the tank will be in a corner...cowering. In a bigger tank they're less homicidal about their babies. Angels are the only fish at the store that figured out how to pull out arm hair

I would consider that size of tank "challenging" unless you have a really compatible pair. There just isn't enough escape room for the lesser of the two fish to retreat to. As others have stated, once angels reach sexual maturity, they can be rather hard on each other.

I tried two angels once in a 36 bowfront (29g footprint) thinking they were peaceful community fish. I was wrong, it did not end well. I have seen angels in similar tank situations where it seemed to be working out, but angels are after all cichlids and all the general rules apply.
