i been wanting to pick up some rays but heard that they need a big tank.would a 4ft. x4ft.x 12in. tank with a 40g. sump do the job? and what species of ray can be kept in it?
or do i need a bigger tank ?

Your tank calculates to be just under 120 gallons.....that would suffice for a temporary home for a pup....but definitely not to house even one ray for life. You need a minimum of a 180 gallon tank that gets turned over 8-10 times an hour.
so to answer your question....yes, you need a bigger tank.

Way too shallow. The ray will get to 12 Inc incl. Tail in no time.

Aborting plan...getting a 6ft. X 3ft. X 3 ft. Now can a tank this size house two rays and a big fish

Can it house 2 of the teacup rays for life ?

Teacup ray is just a generic term used for rays when they are pups....It is not a type of ray.

Based on the questions you are asking, I would suggest that you do alot of research and learn as much as you can before purchasing. Rays are not like other types of fish.....they need plenty of space, REALLY CLEAN water, a variety of food, and in many cases will not take pellets. Read up before you dive in. You will save yourself a bunch of money, and save the rays your are trying to keep unnecessary grief from your lack of knowledge on thier needs.

with rays the bigger the better like everyone says you need a large footprint as the rays will grow to a large size and my ray loves to swim up the glass he is only 8 inches but imagine if you went with the 12 inch it wouldnt have far to grow and wouldnt be long before it would be out and over the top.

Because you thought tea cup rays were actually a type of ray I recomend you don't get any rays. They are a HUGE commitment. I am not getting any until I build my 8'X4' tank and that won't even be permanent. Before I even bought my first fish I did research for 2 years. Now I have about two years of fish keeping experience and still won't get a ray yet. They require way more attention and dedication than almost any other fish. Wait at least 6 months before you get a ray and do a ton of research on them first. This site is probably your best bet for research on rays as well. And I would recomend a 6X4 tank as a minimum.

A 6x3x3 is about 400 gallons, would be great for one of the smaller ray species, true hystrix, scobina, or retic. Male motoros or marbles would probably be ok as they don't get much over 12", but females wouldn't fit in there very well. Whatever the "Big Fish" is you will need to make sure its safe for the rays.

It does sound like you probably need to do some research on rays before getting one, would recommend reading through all the stickies in this forum at the least.
