I was planning on using an old 5.5 gallon tank to house a Blue Crayfish for my daughter. I wanted to do a planted tank as well. Upon doing some research, it seems that a Blue Crayfish in a planted tank would be a bad idea along with the tank size. What would be a good plant friendly fish for this size tank besides a Betta?

Look into Mexican dwarf crayfish - they are generally plant safe and stay small. I wouldn’t mix one with a betta though.

I know I want to do a Dwarf Sag, maybe Java Fern and/or Anubias. I'm kind of bored of Shrimp, but not ruling them out. While I've had them in the past in a nicely aquascaped tank, I'm kind of wanting to just let this little tank grow wild and not sure if I want Shrimp. I wonder how they would behave in a wild growing tank instead of an aquascaped tank? And of course, a Betta is always fun, but I know if I have a Betta, it'll be by itself and I would need to heat the tank.

Decisions...Decisions :grinno:

Betta is the obvious choice, sparkling gourami could also work. There are also quite a few less-common wild betta species if you like bettas but want something a little different. You may need to order them online frmo somewhere like Frank's bettas.
