Starting a progression thread for my one week old nano. I started to get back into planted tanks a few months ago after getting out of them for a few years. It's a standard 5.5 gal. My ultimate goal is to have it heavily planted with 5 neon tetras and a Cory cat for livestock. Here is a pic. Tell me what you think so far. The filter is an ac50 and the light is a diy fixture from rapidled with 3 Cree white LEDs and 2 UV LEDs. The 2 UV LEDs are getting switched out for one more white. The substrate is black fluorite and I got the Malaysian driftwood from my LFS. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? I'm also bouncing.between getting co2 or just using flourish excel

val looks nice in nano's for the tetras it would be great also you could tie some wort to the wood .I wouldn't use the co2 for this just the flourish.

What's Val? Also why would you use flourish excel instead of co2? I plan on buying some Christmas moss or some flame moss for the wood. I'll check out wort too. I need to get a heater yet, I dropped mine and it broke. I'll be getting that on Wednesday. I have also been thinking of what I can put in it for a showpiece fish but I can't think of anything. I would love suggestions

Also will I need to dose anything besides excel? Like potassium, iron or trace?

If you use flourish excel and flourish, the flourish contains potassium, iron and a bunch of nutrients all in the one bottle i believe.

see the link for val.. the hob you have on there will break the water tension which creates a exchange depleting your co2 a small sponge would be better.

With a small tank and lots of plants and few fish, you may not even need any filtration. An AC50 on a 5.5 gallon tank will create too much current.

Okay. I'll see when I get some of the fish and plants in the tank if they have a hard time swimming. It has adjustable flow too. I like the look of that Val, I'll definitely be putting some in the tank

Got my heater ordered. I ordered the Hydor Theo heater 50w. I like the Theo because its only 7 inches long and it will be easy to hide behind my driftwood. No stores around my area had one so I got it from foster and smith. Should be here monday because I live in wisconsin! I also got my plant list ready! What do you think of my selections? Rotala Magenta, christmas or flame moss for the driftwod, dwarf baby tears, wisteria, val, cryptocoryn-red, hornwort and Ludwigia Peruensis. I want it planted pretty heavily

good luck on the baby tears, never did anything in my nano till i took it out and threw it in my toads tank in damp soil and its exploded. without co2 it usually wont flourish
