I bought five clown loaches around 3-4 weeks ago. I didn't look properly, but when I took them home and put them in the tank, two of them had whitespot. I treated them with esha exit, and made sure I finished the course properly, with putting the temp up aswell. I had to re treat a second time becoz the whitespot would not go. They all looked fine, brightly coloured. Then abotu a week after running carbon throught the tank (after the first treatment I did a water change followed by second treatment) two of the loaches died. I noticed the other three left were looking weak, so I tested the water. Since I first put them in the tank and until now, the tests have always been the same (0 ammonia, o nitrite probably 5 nitrate which i would bring back to zero with a water change and pH always either 7.5 or 7.8) Now, today, two of the loaches I found dead, under rocks in the tank and the third one no where to be seen. They looked fine, eating well and active, very colourful - no fast breathing nothing. what on earth is happening to my loaches? Tested the water again, all parameters the same. Ammonia zero, nitrite 0, nitrate 0. They are in a 400L tank which houses a gold nugget, two guppies and 6 small angels and 1 baby bronze cory. All of them are fine - eating well, healthy etc.any ideas?

Sorry about your loaches, what was your salt to water ratio? did the temps match during your water changes?

yes, I made sure the water was same temp, but I did not add any salt...should I have done this? I had a catfish in there, and the ppl on wetwebmedia said that catfish don't tolerate salt well, so I didn't put any in.

Clown loaches are scaleless fish and are sensitive to most medications. I don't know anything about the medication you used but you may want to look up to see if it's suitable for scaleless fish. You may find that the medication may have killed them :-(

yeah,. i was kinda thinking that it weakened them, but i used esha and its supposed to be mild but effective. it can be used on any freshwater fish, so i didnt expect it to kill my loaches. i guesswith them being stressed, high temp and meds it just weakened them too much. omg forgot to say i found one clown loach out of the five and he's doing really well now, he's started to eat like he used to and is really ative noe, colouring up and everything hopefully he will last!

Salt and a temp of 86 deg F is all you need to treat most cases of ich.

i was going to add salt! but then someone told me not to, coz salt would be bad for my gold nugget? or is this wrong? Just so i know for the future, but now i hav a qt tank up and running, so if any casualties occur i won't worry.
