Hi guys, I know some off you work in pet shops, so I was wondering how reputable 5-D Tropical wholesalers are. Im helping my buddy get some uncommonly seen fish in his shop and I noticed they have XLG Festae-4/$30. I called, she said to the best of her knowledge they were festaes, but she has never heard of mayans, uros, "false red terror"
So if anyone could help me out, please do so, thanks

First off, look at the eye spot on their tail. If it goes over half of it, chances are you have a mayan. If the eyespot is relatively small however, only half or less than half as wide as the tail, then chances are it's a festae. Then, the next thing you look at, is the "Y" bar that all true festae have near their heads. I'm sure other members will post pictures to show the difference between the fish. If not, you can google it pretty easily.

He's ordering them from a supplier, he hasn't seen them yet^^

If they don't know their fish, they probably aren't worth ordering from. I wouldn't buy animals from people who know nothing about them.

I have some experience with 5D. They are a pretty decent wholesaler.

Any time you see Festae for an unbelievably low price, such as 4 x XL for $30, they are uros. At least that is what my 10 years in the fish retail business taught me.

I have no wholesale exp. but looking through the list it may be possible. They have 4" snooks for $4.65 (20 lot). $9.50- pr 3"-4" nics. Also I forgot to mention that the women said the XLG "festae" are 5"-6". I dont know what to think?
Thanks for the response guys.

I'd buy them and see what they are, if there uro's I dont think it would be that hard to sell a 5-6inch uro for 8 bucks (about there cost to you)

Hi there.. I know that one of the lfs up here buys from them and have been happy with their orders. I've seen lots of their orders come in and the fish look good. I've waited specifically for a fish from them when I had a choice between them and the other wholesaler the lfs buys from and not been disappointed.
I've not ordered anything rare but the rummeynoses were healthier and bigger than from the other supplier. Their africans and salvinis were also larger and healthier looking. I'm also told their pricing is very good. I once tried to get specific info about a type of rainbow fish they had listed and as I understand it, the person you spoke to might be just "the person taking orders on the phone" and they usually don't have too much knowledge about the fish unless you are very lucky.
I would go for it. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith but if you have a busy shop I'm sure someone will purchase whatever you get. HTH Sue
