Hi,

Just wondering if would be alright to run a 5 gallon nano reef with ONLY live rock for biological filtration and not have a filter in there.

personally i wouldnt do it.......

if kept up with water chages it might be possible tho..

If you are trying to use live rock as your biological filter, its best to get a small filter or powerhead just to move the water around. Now if you got a protein skimmer that would be a lot better, but its not necessary for a 5 gallon.

I wouldn't do with out a filter especially if you are going to have fish or a make a nano reef. What do you plan on putting in the tank?

its do able as long as your not going to keep fish only inverts and rock if you want a fish you need a small filter as the fish need water movement and a lot of inverts also do

i did a 2.5gal mini bow with no filter just used live rock Deep sand bed and a Fuge. and a hang on skimmer on the back. weekly 10% water changes

it is possible.
a man from fishstore/service made a test - 5g nanocube with live rock, actinia and a pair of clown fishes (he called that project "Mini-Nemo"). filtration was only using built-in filter w/o any bioballs/ceramics/etc., water changes were about 1/4 per week. such system was stable for over two years, and many poeple have successfully launched their mini-nemos at home as their first step
