5' planted tank as refugium?

Currently I hv a typical 5x2.5x2.5 cabinet tank located next to my semi-indoor pond (3,000 gallons). I intend to channel water from the pond into this tank and then back to the pond. The tank is the typical underflow/overflow system so the water level in the tank is always maintained. I am planning a slow flow ie using 15mm piping only for inflow n outflow between the tank and pond. There would not be any sump or filter box for this tank.
Pls feel free to comment or highlight issues that need to be considered eg if I provide CO2 to the tank for the plants would it be wasted since the tank is "connected" to the pond? I need to consider all issues before I implement this project. Reason for doing this is the tank is lying idle in my semi indoor garden area and a planted tank would be great and I didn't want to maintain another tank for fish that I need to waterchange regularly.
