I now have 7 gar in my 125g tank. They are all between 13" and 15" now. 5 are shortnose gars, and 2 are my fat Florida gars. The last shortnose gar and the spotted gar are both growing out in the 55g tank. I think before too much longer both of them are gonna be in the 125g tank, giving me a total of 9 gar in that tank! Spring can't come soon enough (or a larger tank...).

* And don't pay attention to the discoloration on the one shortnose gar. I just moved him to the 125g tank today, and the net rubbed off some of his slime coat. These shortnose gars do NOT like to be bothered with.

awesome gars you have there , do they get along with the bluegill and red devil ?

They get along fine. And its actually a red snook, not a red devil. None of the cichlids or bluegills mess with the gar, and the gar don't mess with them.

It seems like it might be a little cramped in there, but for the most part I see nothing but good work from your direction conner... :headbang2

Thanks. The shortnose gars were all supposed to be outside in the 3,500g pond, but I wasn't able to get it finished in time to put them out before it got too cold. They'll be transferred out there in the spring. That'll empty the tank out quite a bit. If I have to, I can sell a couple of them of to make room.

VERY nice! dont think it's actually crowded probably just the driftwood making it look crowded..

hey conner,

the fishes look great. they may be a bit crowded, but as long as you keep up with water changes you should be ok...in captivity shortnoses actually do better in this sort of setting anyway.

the centrarchid fish in the last two pics is not a bluegill, but in fact a green sunfish (much more aggressive, but much hardier as well) --

Thanks Solomon. And the pics make it look a lot more crowded than it is. I'll take a couple more to try and show how much space there is. And they seem to like being in a large group like that. I'll look over, and every now and then all 7 gar will be lined up together just a couple of inches apart.

I know the fish is a green sunfish, I just said bluegill cuz the guy above me did. I have 2 green sunfish and one bluegill in that tank. The green sunnies are awesome!
