got a 60x18x18 80g acrylic tank today(really light) and i have a 4' stand that i have used for a 90g glass tank(really heavy). my question is could i cut a piece of 3/4" plywood the size of the acrylic tank and put it on the 4' stand? im not worried about the weight, its goona weigh much less than the 90g that was on there before. more worried if the 3/4" ply will bend at the 6" of each side hanging off the stand. i would use foam between the tank and plywood of course.

idk much about that, but since you seem to know much about that kind of stuff, would a 75g with 100lbs of sand + lava be suported by a traditional 55g stand? sorry, i know this is your thread, but it kind of relates. . . doesn't it?

well since youll be adding alot of weight for a stand designed for a smaller tank i personally wouldnt do it. but i have seen some crazy stuff before!

If you get a real high grade of plywood it might work as long as it's supported all along the bottom. In fact I've seen several stands that were built this way intentionally for effect. Make sure you get at least 11 or 13 ply...

As to the 75 on a 55 gal stand....I wouldnt try it with one of those iron stands sold for 55's or one of the particle board petsmart stands but if your talking about a well built real wooden stand then I would say yes...it should handle it just fine.

i definitely wouldn't attempt either. the 5ft acrilic on the 4ft stand wouldn't work unless you built an entire platform to set on the stand. just the plywood alone wouldn't support the tank bottom enough and would cause a lot of stress around the ends.

i wouldn't do the 75g on the 48"x12" stand for the same reasons. just puts a lot of stress on either the front, back, or both. easy remedy would be to just make a simple platform outta 2x4's and set it on the stand. with the tank on that (as long as it's level) there would be even pressure all across the bottom of the tank. after all better be safe than sorry. 75g is a lot of water that could do a lot of damage and cause a crap load of stress

hahahaha i had my 60 agllon on storebough rikidyA$$ shelving, it wobbles but held for three years untill i moved it down stairs, i tend to overdoo everything and that was a laps of judgment, i was excited to set up my first tank... well anyway dmopar and AL i wouldnt do it... 2x4's cost $2 and a sheet of good one side maple/oak/pine plywood is $50 a 8X4 sheet... over engeneer it and never wonder...

dmopar you might get away with just getting come 3/4mdf/plywood thats the same size as your tank, then bracing the leftovers at a angle to the existing stand... but is it worth it?, acrylic dose crack even though its not that big, its still going to be almost 900lb...

i got this one from ikea thats solid oak? i think?, anyway its not partical board for $300 looks nice and its sterdy as hell... i got it for my 120 but put my 60 on it... its 5' and a bit... and STRONG 10X stronger then the weak stuff you get from the LFS as a "stand"

and what my 60 was on, two of the top sections, and thats it... looked nice but not the way to go...

If your gonna do it I'd get some 1" peice of plywood, and cut some braces to screw to the plywood and to the oraginal tank stand. Put at least 2 to 3 braces on each side, maybe made of 2"x4".
