Hey everyone,
I recently purchased two small 4-5" tigs with badly grown tails. They had had their entire tails removed by something when they were imported and have grown back as a single large fin. Lacking the triangle in the tail fin. They are doing great otherwise, and I am looking for ideas about correcting their tails. I have seen videos with tail fin cutting to correct defection some Asian aros, and am wondering if anyone can help me figure out what to do. I will post pictures in am. But tail fin is currently growing without any streamer at all and lacks the tradition horizontal V found in a tail on them.

I have cut a few tigs streamers that grew back bent

You can trim them no problem

A picture is the best way to show what you mean

I used to catch a lot of flack for it, but I've got a lot of tigrinus tails to ensure they came back nice and straight. Take a picture and maybe we can offer a little more insight.

I also have cut a lot of my fishes with bent tail and it grew back straight, as long as the tail is not damage too close to the body it can be cut and will grow back.

How about some pics of the tail?

That's pretty bad. It may not grow back. You can try trimming very gently with a cuticle scissor as little as possible or even scrape the area raw. That may stimulate the tissue to regenerate. I have done this to a few fish and saw some results. If you do this make sure your water quality is perfect, you don't want the fish to get an infection.

They are fairly short I would give them time to grow back first

They grow back very fast you should see good growth within 3-4 weeks then trim if needed

Are the two tigs in the same tanks as they could be fighting causing the damage

You will just have to wait and see not much else can be done at this point

I had some paroon sharks that had fins and tail rot(that I save from a LFS) this short before some grew their tail back 100% one died because his tail was totally gone(it tail was a nub making hard to swim.
Just leave it along and have clean water it should start to grow. Like T1 said wait and then trim alittle.

The pictures are showing a month plus of re growth already. They had no tails whatsoever when first arrived. What you see has grown over the past month or month and a half.

Update and more help needed.... The tig is now 12" and aside from tail perfect. Eats from your hand and has great colors. The tail is still bad though. I just got some clove oil and am thinking of sedating the tig and then trimming the tail down and possibly shaving (scraping) the top and bottom of tail to possibly stimulate the fin to regrow. From pics I've seen and others in person. Looks like the tail fin on this one is not growing from the proper place up on the tail and possibly y not correct. Any thoughts? Ideas? Thanks
