Would a penguin 350 be okay to filterout a 50 gallon oct tank.

in theory; yes but i don't think that would be enough juice to move all the water.

Depends what you are stocking the tank with. Lightly stocked / smaller fish it will be fine. If you have monster fish or are overstocked - then over-filter.

No problem with putting that filter on now, and supplementing it with something else later if you need to.
